The ruling ends a six-year dispute over the proposed plant that began in 2019, when a Kenyan tribunal initially canceled an environmental license for the massive $2billion coal facility.  Local and regional groups including Save Lamu, the Katiba Institute. DeCoalanize Kenya and StopEACOP applauded the government’s ruling, citing it as a victory for community health, constitutional rights, and for upholding Kenya’s climate commitments.
